Amazon, the titan behind AWS, is about to close one of the largest corporate deals of the year by negotiating a $10 billion investment in OpenAI, according to The Information and reported by businessinsider.es. This capital injection would come in the latest funding round for the startup that has revolutionized artificial intelligence with ChatGPT, just three years after its launch and only a month after operating as a conventional company.
With this deal, Amazon would join a select group of investors that already includes giants like Microsoft, Softbank, Nvidia, and prominent venture capital funds, all of which have been key in OpenAI's meteoric rise, which has required multi-billion dollar investments to sustain its growth.
The new funding round would value OpenAI at over $500 billion, a figure that has been discussed since the stock buyback from employees in October and the previous capital injection last summer, solidifying Sam Altman's firm as one of the most valuable in the tech sector.
This move by Amazon comes after its backing of Anthropic, OpenAI's rival and creator of Claude, with an investment of up to $8 billion during 2024. Jeff Bezos's company thus strengthens its position at the center of the technological revolution, driven by the growing demand for data centers and cloud computing services necessary to train and operate advanced AI models.
OpenAI's funding needs have skyrocketed after committing to infrastructure investments of over $1.4 trillion, including agreements with data center providers like Oracle and chip manufacturers like Nvidia, AMD, and Broadcom. In November, OpenAI signed a contract to acquire $38 billion in AWS capacity, marking its first major deal with the cloud market leader. Amazon's entry as an investor thus reinforces the strategic alliance between the two companies.
