Polarization is inherent to human nature: we like to take sides, whether it's for football teams, food styles, or tech brands. For decades, Apple and Microsoft have been the perfect example of this dichotomy. Apple, with its polished image and loyal user base, has traditionally been the favorite, while Microsoft, despite its efforts, has carried the label of the "tech villain."
This isn't about judging whether that love or hate is deserved, but rather acknowledging that these feelings have shaped the recent history of technology. Now, a new rivalry is beginning to take shape in the world of artificial intelligence, with OpenAI and Anthropic as the main players. The parallel with the old Apple-Microsoft dispute is evident, especially after recent events involving the Pentagon, Anthropic, and OpenAI.
From this recent scandal, two opposing images have emerged. On one hand, Anthropic has reinforced its reputation as an ethics advocate, refusing to yield to the Pentagon's demands, which has been seen as a gesture of integrity. On the other hand, OpenAI has seized the opportunity to secure a government contract, fueling the perception that it is an opportunistic and unscrupulous company. The impact has been immediate: downloads of ChatGPT fell last Saturday, while Anthropic's Claude surpassed its competitor in popularity for the first time.
The outcome is clear: Anthropic has positioned itself as the "good" in the story, while OpenAI has become the target of criticism. A 'Cancel ChatGPT' movement has even emerged, urging users to abandon OpenAI products as punishment for their "betrayal."
We are witnessing an interesting evolution in the identity of these companies. Sam Altman seems to be following in Bill Gates' footsteps in the 90s, betting on aggressive growth and government alliances. In contrast, Dario Amodei presents himself as the heir to Apple's rebellious spirit, advocating for "conscious" AI and refusing to cross certain red lines, which has generated sympathy among Claude users.
It is ironic that Anthropic was born from a split from OpenAI for ethical reasons. Thus, the narrative of purity versus business pragmatism repeats itself, evoking the classic confrontation between Apple and Microsoft. OpenAI is shaping up to be the "Windows" of AI, while Anthropic takes on the role of "MacBook."
However, these reactions are often fleeting. OpenAI faces real risks, such as potential talent drain or Anthropic's consolidation as a reference for ethical AI. But for Anthropic, maintaining that pristine image is also a challenge: any contradiction could cost it dearly. In fact, criticisms about Anthropic's involvement in military projects are already circulating on social media, calling into question its supposed purity.
Ultimately, we are seeing how ideological values are once again permeating the tech debate. Companies seek to differentiate themselves, but for users, it all comes down to choosing between "good" and "bad." If we once loved Macs and tolerated PCs, now the discussion shifts to AI: Claude represents ethics, ChatGPT ambition.
But this is just the beginning.
