Jerome Powell, the chairman of the Federal Reserve, has recently acknowledged the profound impact of artificial intelligence, stating, "I never thought I would see 5 or 6 years of productivity growth." The advancement of AI is transforming the global landscape, with tech giants from the United States and China leading the race, while Europe is ramping up its investments to keep pace. In this context, the French company Mistral AI has introduced Devstral 2, an open-source artificial intelligence model that promises to revolutionize the sector. While ChatGPT and DeepSeek continue to dominate the market, and Google attempts to position itself with Gemini, Mistral AI bursts onto the scene with an innovative proposal: Devstral 2, an advanced coding system that automates end-to-end processes through a modern command-line interface. According to specialized media such as Genbeta and Xataka, Devstral 2 outperforms most recognized AIs, ranking just behind Claude 4.5 Sonnet, GPT 5.1 Codex Max, Gemini 3 Pro, and Deepseek V3.2 in benchmark tests, with a score of 72.2%. This advancement coincides with the European Union's investment of 200 billion euros to compete with the United States and China in AI development. One of the major advantages of Devstral 2 is its open-source nature, unlike alternatives such as Gemini, Claude, or GPT 5, which are proprietary and have restrictions on free use. Additionally, Devstral 2 surpasses the power of Grok, the AI from xAI driven by Elon Musk. Meanwhile, Microsoft is strengthening its presence in India with record investments in AI. The launch of Devstral 2 will initially be free, following a model similar to ChatGPT, which now offers affordable subscriptions with additional features. Subsequently, the cost will be 0.34 euros (0.40 dollars) per million input tokens and 1.70 euros (2 dollars) per million output tokens, equivalent to about 750,000 processed words in each case. In terms of technical requirements, Devstral 2 needs four H100 GPUs to operate in data centers, although Mistral AI also offers Devstral Small 2, a lighter version that can run on a single GPU or even just a CPU, designed for developers and small businesses. Compared to Chinese and American models, Mistral AI's systems are much more compact: Devstral Small 2 (24B) and Devstral 2 (123B) are between 5 and 28 times smaller than DeepSeek 3.2, and up to 41 times smaller than Kimi K2. This facilitates implementation on limited hardware and lowers entry barriers for developers and SMEs. Notable features of Devstral 2 include the ability to analyze large codebases in multiple languages, manage changes across several files while maintaining architectural context, and automatically detect and correct errors. According to Mistral AI, these advancements demonstrate that compact models can match or exceed the performance of much larger competitors, opening new opportunities for AI adoption in Europe and worldwide.
