BBVA has begun integrating its services into ChatGPT, starting with its digital banks in Italy and Germany, aiming to position itself as a leader in European banking. The Spanish bank has formed a long-term strategic alliance with OpenAI, seeking to enhance the use of generative artificial intelligence in both its internal operations and customer service. The agreement, announced at OpenAI's headquarters in San Francisco, reinforces BBVA's commitment to lead digital transformation in the financial sector. After nearly two years of prior collaboration, during which both entities tested use cases and adjusted models, the relationship is now entering a more ambitious phase. OpenAI will actively participate in designing customized solutions for BBVA, particularly in Spain and Europe, with joint investments and a shared roadmap. OpenAI will be key in BBVA's AI strategy, which aims to transform customer experience, optimize internal processes, and redefine work methods. The goal is to integrate AI natively into the operational model, not just as a one-off tool. Carlos Torres Vila, BBVA's president, highlighted the bank's pioneering role in digital banking and noted that the alliance with OpenAI will enable a more intelligent and personalized experience, anticipating each customer's needs. For OpenAI, BBVA represents an exemplary case of rapid and ambitious adoption of generative AI in the financial sector. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, emphasized that the collaboration will focus on integrating its models into the core of the bank's products and operations, transforming the experience for millions of users. The agreement places BBVA among the first major European banks with preferential access to OpenAI's most advanced capabilities, including expert talent, cutting-edge models, and the opportunity to experiment with new technologies before their general release. A distinguishing aspect is the co-creation of specific solutions for banking, beyond the use of generic tools. Both companies will work together to design products tailored to BBVA's needs and European financial regulations. Highlighted projects include the development of an intelligent financial conversational assistant, which will help customers manage their accounts, understand their spending, and plan savings through natural dialogue, setting a new standard in the bank-client relationship. The alliance also includes tools for commercial managers, allowing for more personalized advice thanks to AI, which will provide synthesized information and real-time recommendations, enhancing interaction with clients and businesses. In the area of risk and internal control, OpenAI and BBVA will work on models to detect risk patterns, improve credit granting, and strengthen oversight, always under European regulations. Operationally, the collaboration includes modernizing key tasks such as software development, process automation, and internal support. The concept of a "digital alter ego" stands out, an AI assistant that learns from each employee's work style and can execute tasks under their supervision. This "alter ego" will be a proactive support for staff, assisting in document drafting, information analysis, or programming, always under BBVA's security and privacy policies. Final control will remain with the employee, who will review and validate the AI's proposals, allowing them to free up time for higher-value tasks. BBVA aims to promote a new productivity model based on generative AI, not only digitizing processes but also rethinking work organization across all areas. OpenAI emphasizes that the adoption of these internal assistants requires a gradual rollout, training, and advanced user communities. BBVA has already conducted pilots and internal surveys to facilitate the integration of these tools into daily work routines. The alliance also serves as a laboratory for best practices in the responsible use of AI in regulated environments, relevant for other European banks attentive to regulatory evolution. Another pillar of the agreement is the deployment of ChatGPT Enterprise throughout the organization. BBVA will extend this corporate version to its more than 120,000 employees, following a pilot with 11,000 users that showed improvements in efficiency and time savings in repetitive tasks. According to BBVA, 80% of pilot users used the tool daily, saving about three hours a week. OpenAI highlights the bank's democratic approach, distributing licenses and promoting use with training and advanced user communities. With the generalization of ChatGPT Enterprise, BBVA seeks to consolidate AI as a daily tool, accelerating cultural transformation and the adoption of new solutions co-created with OpenAI. Additionally, BBVA and OpenAI are working on the direct integration of banking services into ChatGPT, allowing users to consult information and perform transactions from the conversational assistant. Prototypes have already been shown in Italy and Germany, with the idea that any customer can interact with the bank through this channel, meeting security and data protection requirements. This approach turns the conversational channel into an additional means of relationship with the bank, adapting to users accustomed to virtual assistants and facilitating a more natural interaction. In the European context, the initiative represents a step towards more open and user-centered banking models, where technology adapts to the customer's language. BBVA aims to lead this transition in its main digital markets. The integration of financial services into generative AI platforms poses regulatory and trust challenges, from data protection to transparency in recommendations. BBVA assures that any commercial deployment will comply with the standards of European and national regulators. The agreement, which is strategic and long-term, focuses on developing practical and scalable solutions aligned with the ethical and regulatory requirements of the European banking sector. For BBVA, the alliance reinforces its commitment to technological innovation, adding generative AI to its digitalization and data analytics strategy to strengthen its position against other banks and digital players. For OpenAI, collaborating with BBVA means consolidating its presence in regulated sectors and demonstrating the safety and responsibility of its models in the financial realm, serving as a reference for other European organizations interested in generative AI. The collaboration aims to establish a new standard in the banking of the future: always-available financial assistants, employees supported by digital "alter egos," and more agile internal processes. The real impact of this initiative will be seen as solutions move from the lab to the daily operations of clients and employees.
