Google has introduced an innovative feature for Gemini, its artificial intelligence assistant, which promises to take personalization to the next level. Under the name "personal intelligence," this feature allows Gemini to access more deeply the applications within the Google ecosystem, such as Gmail, Google Photos, Drive, YouTube, and search history, with the aim of providing responses and recommendations that are much more tailored to each user.
Google's proposal is for Gemini to analyze relevant data from our emails, photos, documents, and even our searches and YouTube views. For example, if we ask about tires for our car, Gemini could identify the model and usage of the vehicle by reviewing information stored in Gmail or Google Photos, without us needing to provide those details manually.
Another highlighted use case is travel planning: Gemini can suggest destinations and activities based on our photos and previous preferences, or recommend movies and music considering our history on YouTube and Google. Additionally, the AI is capable of remembering our choices for future queries, gradually adapting to our tastes and needs.
The key to this feature is context: Gemini seeks to better understand each user to provide more precise and useful responses, taking into account data from Gmail, YouTube, the calendar, and other services. However, this level of access to personal information has raised concerns about privacy.
Google has clarified that "personal intelligence" is completely optional and is turned off by default. When activating the feature, users can choose which applications they allow Gemini to access, for example, enabling only YouTube and Gmail, but not Google Photos. Furthermore, the company assures that private content from emails and photos is not used to train its AI models.
Currently, this feature is available only to Google AI Pro and AI Ultra users in certain countries, both in the web version and the mobile app of Gemini. It is expected to reach more regions and users in the future, who will be able to decide how much they want to share their information with the assistant.
