Google Chrome takes a step forward in AI integration with its latest update, incorporating new features powered by Gemini, its advanced AI assistant. Now, Gemini can navigate the web automatically, marking a milestone in user experience and positioning Chrome as a strong competitor against solutions like ChatGPT Atlas and other intelligent agent platforms. With this update, Gemini is directly integrated into a sidebar accessible with a single click. By activating the AI icon, a panel opens on the right side of the browser, allowing interaction with the chatbot for queries, summaries, and other tasks without leaving the current page. Google emphasizes that the Gemini sidebar facilitates multitasking, enabling actions like editing images open in the browser without needing to load them separately. These edits leverage Nano Banana technology, one of Gemini's most popular features. Additionally, the integration allows connecting services like YouTube, Gmail, and Google Maps, making it easier to access and manage these applications from the same sidebar. However, the most innovative feature is automated navigation, which elevates the experience of AI agents to a new level. The trend of integrated intelligent agents in browsers has gained momentum recently, with proposals from OpenAI and startups like Perplexity. Google, however, aims to differentiate itself by allowing Gemini to perform complex tasks on behalf of the user: from filling out forms and downloading files to booking trips, making online purchases, or posting on social media, all from the sidebar. Gemini can execute sequences of actions without human intervention, such as buying ingredients for a recipe, selecting products, and adding them to the shopping cart. However, Google clarifies that the user can stop the process at any time and that Gemini will always request authorization before completing any action, such as an online purchase. Using autonomous navigation requires a high level of trust, as the AI can access sensitive information, like the password manager, if the user permits it. Therefore, Google recommends caution, especially regarding potential security risks like prompt or clipboard injection, known threats in agent browsers. Chrome, being the most widely used browser globally, thus expands Gemini's reach, although initially, autonomous navigation will only be available in the United States and for subscribers of the Google AI Pro and Ultra plans. Additionally, a daily action limit has been established to ensure user safety and control.
