Elon Musk challenges OpenAI with Grok 5: "It will be devastatingly good"
The race to lead artificial intelligence is intensifying. Elon Musk, through his company xAI, has announced that Grok 5, the next version of his AI assistant, will be "devastatingly good" and aims to surpass OpenAI's GPT-5 and Google's Gemini. However, the development of these models involves not only technological competition but also enormous economic and environmental challenges.
Grok, xAI's chatbot, relies on language models trained with trillions of words and examples, enabling it to answer questions, draft texts, and solve complex tasks. This training requires supercomputers equipped with thousands of GPUs, running for months and consuming large amounts of energy, water, and cooling resources.
According to a report from Epoch AI, training Grok 4 cost $490 million and required 246 million hours of computation on GPU H100s. The energy consumption reached 310 gigawatt-hours, enough to power a city of 4,000 residents, and generated 154,000 tons of CO₂, equivalent to the emissions of a Boeing airplane over three years. Additionally, the process used 754 million liters of water, necessary for both the natural gas generators of the Memphis Colossus supercomputer and the cooling systems of data centers.
In response to these challenges, xAI has launched Grok 4 Fast, an optimized version that uses 40% fewer thought tokens and reduces costs by 98%, while maintaining the same performance. Grok 4 Fast incorporates agentic search capabilities, allowing it to browse the web and the social network X for real-time answers. Independent tests have shown that it outperforms models like OpenAI's GPT-4o and Gemini 2.5 Pro in efficiency and intelligence density.
Grok 4 Fast is now available to all users on Android and iOS, aiming to democratize access to advanced AI.
The case of Grok highlights the enormous environmental impact of artificial intelligence. Each new generation of models is more expensive and demands more resources, raising serious questions about the sustainability of the sector. The advancement of AI promises to transform industries but necessitates finding solutions to reduce its ecological footprint and ensure responsible development.
