TIME magazine has named a collective as Person of the Year: "The Architects of AI." This group has been recognized for leading the creation of "the era of thinking machines," radically transforming the present and generating both awe and concern in society. The debate over the impact of artificial intelligence on employment is becoming increasingly intense. According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), the jobs most exposed to automation include administrative roles, financial analysts, and programmers, among others.
Sarah, a freelance translator, recounts how her work has changed: "I used to do complete translations and then review them. Now, most of the time, I only correct texts generated by ChatGPT, which lack human nuance and context. However, for companies, it represents significant savings."
The effect of AI is global and affects all sectors. In the past three years, there have been mass layoffs worldwide. In the tech sector alone, over 700,000 jobs have been lost. Companies like Meta, IBM, and Intel justify these cuts by the need to reduce costs and increase efficiency, especially in administrative tasks. In Spain, Amazon has implemented about 30 artificial intelligences that directly replace workers, aiming to cut labor costs, according to José Varela, head of digitalization at UGT. The company plans to eliminate 1,200 jobs in the country.
In this context, Telefónica has announced a strategic plan that includes a redundancy plan in seven of its subsidiaries, potentially reducing its workforce by between 4,500 and 6,000 employees, which represents up to 30% of its staff. David La Hoz, an AI expert, emphasizes the need for a cultural shift in both companies and workers to adapt to this new reality.
