Ainara Cortés Mateos (Madrid, 2002) studied journalism at the Complutense University of Madrid. After a period at a media outlet specializing in education, she chose to direct her career towards international journalism. Recently, Google signed an agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense, allowing the Pentagon and the military to use its artificial intelligence systems, such as Gemini, and Google Cloud infrastructure for legitimate government purposes, according to Reuters. This move aligns Google with other companies in the AI sector, such as OpenAI and xAI, which are already collaborating with federal agencies. The news has raised concerns among more than 600 Google employees, who sent a letter to management requesting a halt to classified military agreements, as reported by Infodefensa. This situation recalls the 2018 Maven Project, when Google's collaboration with the U.S. military on image analysis sparked internal protests and a subsequent distancing between the company and the Pentagon. The agreement, valued at around $200 million and signed in 2025, includes a clause prohibiting the use of Google's AI tools for domestic mass surveillance or autonomous weapons without adequate human oversight, according to Reuters. However, the contract does not grant Google the ability to control or veto legitimate government decisions, which has raised concerns among some employees who argue that AI should benefit society and not be used for potentially harmful classified tasks. According to Infodefensa, this pact reflects the growing complexity of the relationships between national security and tech companies, where competition shifts to obtaining government contracts and federal programs. Anthropic, for its part, has decided not to participate in such agreements after refusing to remove safeguards against autonomous weapons and surveillance, becoming sidelined, according to Xataka. The collaboration will allow the Pentagon to diversify suppliers, improve its processing capabilities, and facilitate the integration of commercial solutions into its digital infrastructure. The New York Times notes that these tools could be used to manage sensitive information and support the planning and execution of military operations. Reuters highlights that Google commits to closely collaborate with government agencies on both classified and unclassified projects, maintaining restrictions on the use of its AI for mass surveillance and autonomous weapons without human control. The challenge for the company will be to ensure ethical and responsible use of artificial intelligence within the framework of its agreement with the Pentagon. Source: larazon.es
