Microsoft has introduced MAI-Image-2-Efficient, an artificial intelligence model designed for companies that need to generate large volumes of images quickly and efficiently. In the current competition for generative AI, speed and usability have become priorities, and Microsoft aims to optimize these aspects over raw power.
According to the company, MAI-Image-2-Efficient is up to 22% faster than its predecessor, MAI-Image-2, and can be up to four times more efficient in terms of latency and GPU consumption. Additionally, Microsoft claims it outperforms Google's Gemini models in speed by 40%, establishing itself as a standout option for business workflows.
The model is priced at $5 per million input tokens and $19.50 per million output tokens, representing a 41% reduction compared to previous versions. This cost adjustment could lead to significant savings for companies generating thousands or millions of images daily.
MAI-Image-2-Efficient is aimed at three main scenarios: e-commerce and marketing platforms, where it automates the creation of catalogs and visual campaigns; integration into conversational interfaces, where real-time image generation is essential; and rapid prototyping for designers and creatives, facilitating agile exploration of ideas.
Despite its improvements in speed and efficiency, this model does not replace the original. Microsoft emphasizes that both systems complement each other: MAI-Image-2-Efficient prioritizes speed and clarity, ideal for illustrations and animations, while MAI-Image-2 remains preferred for tasks requiring greater detail and visual complexity, such as precise text representation.
This launch marks the beginning of a new strategy for Microsoft in AI, focused on adapting its models to specific needs. More updates are expected at the Build 2026 conference, where the company will present new integrations and developments in its artificial intelligence ecosystem.
