The opening of MWC26 Barcelona brought together prominent institutional figures and key global leaders in the tech sector to discuss three major current challenges: completing the rollout of 5G, advancing artificial intelligence, and strengthening protection against digital fraud. The inaugural day was also marked by significant announcements, such as AWS's investment in Spain, which will reach $33 billion.
The event was attended by King Felipe VI, the Prime Minister, and the President of the Generalitat of Catalonia, in an edition that marked Vivek Badrinath's debut as the GSMA's director general leading the congress.
During his speech, Badrinath emphasized the importance of completing the 5G deployment, addressing the challenge of artificial intelligence—including the Open Telco AI initiative and the launch of the first open reasoning model in Swahili—and combating the rise of digital scams. "The future presents great challenges, but also exciting opportunities," he stressed.
The inaugural session reinforced three key pillars for the telecom sector: trust in technology, network security, and international cooperation. Senior executives from AT&T, Bharti Enterprises, China Telecom, Orange, and Vodafone Group agreed on the need to move towards greater shared responsibility.
In this regard, Christel Heydemann, CEO of Orange, warned: "AI-generated content already surpasses that created by humans... Technology is advancing rapidly, but trust is not."
