The relationship between people and artificial intelligence is reaching new levels: some users are developing such a dependency that they require professional help, while others are forming emotional or romantic bonds with chatbots. In this context, OpenAI has surprised many by announcing that it will allow erotic content on ChatGPT, opening the door to a new phase in AI monetization.
According to The Verge, OpenAI's application lead recently confirmed that the anticipated "adult mode" for ChatGPT, initially scheduled for December, will be delayed until the first quarter of 2026 due to the age verification system still not being ready.
This change marks a notable shift in the stance of Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, who months ago was proud of not creating "sexbots" for profit maximization, in a clear reference to Elon Musk and his chatbot Grok. After facing criticism, Altman defended the decision, stating that OpenAI does not intend to be the "moral police of the world" and that offering freedom of use is key to its mission.
The main reason behind this change is economic. Although ChatGPT has 1.8 billion users, only 3% pay for a subscription. OpenAI aims to raise that figure to 8.5% by 2030, and the adult mode is one of the strategies to achieve this.
The market for adult content in AI is enormous: according to The Economist, it is expected to generate $2.5 billion in 2025 and grow by 27% annually until 2028. Competitors like Grok, Character.Ai, and Replika are already exploring this sector, which is too lucrative to ignore, even if it contradicts previous statements.
However, the financial challenge is significant. Sam Altman estimates that OpenAI will need to invest €1.4 trillion over the next eight years. Even if the adult mode manages to double the number of subscribers, profitability remains a distant goal.
OpenAI is also exploring other avenues, such as developing its own hardware ("the iPhone of AI") and robotics, although both require colossal investments. Advertising and adult content are emerging as the most realistic paths to sustain the company's growth.
