OpenAI faces new challenges amid rumors of developing a smartphone in collaboration with Qualcomm, generating significant excitement in the tech sector. However, the artificial intelligence company is also under pressure following the lawsuit initiated by Elon Musk against the company and its CEO, Sam Altman. Additionally, according to the Wall Street Journal, OpenAI has reportedly failed to meet its internal user acquisition and sales targets, raising concerns about its ability to sustain the high infrastructure costs associated with AI. The report indicates that OpenAI did not meet several of its monthly sales goals in 2026, while its competitor Anthropic has gained ground in the coding and enterprise solutions markets. Furthermore, the ChatGPT chatbot reportedly did not reach the target of one billion weekly active users set for the end of 2025. The subscriber churn rate remains a challenge, especially with the growth of Gemini, Google's alternative. Sarah Friar, OpenAI's CFO, has expressed concern about the need to increase sales to cover the company's future computing demands. This situation reflects broader investor worries, who are cautiously observing the high spending on data centers and AI chips amid uncertainty about the return on investment. OpenAI has announced its commitment to invest over $1.4 trillion in artificial intelligence infrastructure. To finance these ambitious plans, both OpenAI and Anthropic have turned to venture capital and large tech companies. In February, OpenAI closed a record funding round of $110 billion, led by SoftBank Group Corp. SoftBank's shares, which contributed $30 billion in that round, fell by as much as 7.5% on the Tokyo stock exchange. With this latest commitment, SoftBank's total investment in OpenAI would reach $64.6 billion, representing a stake of nearly 13% by the end of the year. (Source: businessinsider.es)
