OpenAI Strengthens ChatGPT Security with Advanced Account Security
OpenAI has introduced Advanced Account Security (AAS), a new set of measures designed to protect ChatGPT accounts from unauthorized access and safeguard users' confidential information. This initiative includes tools such as access keys and physical security keys, raising the standard of protection.
The system is particularly aimed at users at high risk of digital attacks, such as journalists, officials, politicians, or researchers, although anyone can benefit from these enhancements. AAS centralizes security management, making it easier to activate all protections from a single panel, and applies to both ChatGPT and Codex accounts.
Among the new features, traditional password login has been eliminated. Instead, users will be required to use more secure methods such as biometric data (fingerprint, facial recognition, or device PIN) or physical security keys. OpenAI has partnered with Yubico, the manufacturer of YubiKeys, to provide one of the most robust defenses against phishing, using public key cryptography to authenticate the user when connecting the key via USB or NFC.
Account recovery has also been strengthened. If a user's email or phone number is compromised, it will no longer be possible to recover the account through these methods. Instead, backup passwords, security keys, or recovery keys will be required. It is important to note that if these credentials are lost, OpenAI will not be able to assist in recovery, as it does not have access to this data.
Another relevant improvement is session management. With advanced security enabled, sessions will be shorter, and login verification will be requested more frequently, minimizing exposure time in case a device is compromised. Additionally, users will receive notifications of new logins and will be able to review and manage active sessions on different devices. OpenAI has also confirmed that conversations from these accounts will not be used to train its AI models.
The company emphasizes that these measures respond to the increasing use of artificial intelligence in sensitive personal and professional areas, where information protection is crucial. According to OpenAI, the goal is to expand access to technologies that safeguard both communities and critical systems and national security.
