In a recent analysis, Professor Pablo Foncillas reflects on the impact that the introduction of advertising in AI-powered chatbots would have. According to Foncillas, tech giants like Alphabet and OpenAI are already exploring this possibility, incorporating experts in advertising and sales, and experimenting with hybrid business models that allow them to monetize their services without losing user trust.
Despite it being over three years since the launch of ChatGPT, only about 5% of its users opt for the paid version, a figure that seems insufficient to cover the high costs of maintaining and developing these platforms. In this scenario, Foncillas warns that the integration of advertising, even in the form of personalized recommendations, could introduce an imperceptible bias in the AI's responses. This would make it difficult for users to distinguish between useful information and messages influenced by commercial interests.
