Amazon strengthens its commitment to artificial intelligence with an additional investment of $5 billion in Anthropic, according to Bloomberg, and is considering increasing that amount to $20 billion in the future. This move consolidates the collaboration between the two companies in an increasingly competitive AI sector.
Anthropic, responsible for the chatbot Claude and advanced programming tools, announced alongside Amazon that it plans to allocate over $100 billion in the next decade to cloud technologies and chips developed by Amazon. Following the announcement, Amazon's shares rose more than 3% in after-hours trading.
Amazon had previously invested $8 billion in Anthropic, becoming one of its main partners. This alliance has allowed Amazon Web Services to integrate cutting-edge AI models and position its Trainium chips as a relevant option in the market. Meanwhile, Anthropic has gained access to Amazon's extensive corporate customer base, with over 100,000 companies using the Claude models through AWS.
Founded in 2021 by former OpenAI members, Anthropic plans to go public this year. The company aims to expand its enterprise customer base to tackle the high costs of AI development. In February, Anthropic closed a funding round of $30 billion, reaching a valuation of $380 billion, and has received offers that place it above $800 billion.
Despite the success of products like Claude Code, Anthropic faces regulatory challenges in the United States related to AI safety, which has led to litigation with the government and could impact its business.
Amazon maintains its position as a minority investor in Anthropic, without representation on the board or in the company's trust. Future investments will be subject to meeting certain commercial milestones, the company has stated.
