ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, is advancing in the development of its own artificial intelligence chip and has begun talks with Samsung Electronics for its manufacturing, according to a report by Reuters citing sources close to the project.
The Chinese tech company expects to receive the first samples of these chips before the end of March and plans to manufacture at least 100,000 units this year, primarily focused on AI inference tasks, according to the information published by Reuters.
The report also notes that production could increase to reach 350,000 units. Additionally, negotiations with Samsung include potential access to memory chips, a resource that remains limited as companies worldwide strengthen their AI infrastructure.
For its part, ByteDance described the information about developing its own chip as inaccurate, without providing further details, while Samsung declined to comment, according to Reuters.
The project, internally identified as SeedChip, reflects ByteDance's commitment to artificial intelligence, including the development of language models and the expansion of its technological infrastructure. Reuters had previously reported on ByteDance's collaboration with Broadcom Inc in creating an advanced AI processor.
Furthermore, ByteDance plans to invest more than 160 billion yuan (about 22 billion dollars) in AI-related acquisitions this year, including the purchase of chips from NVIDIA Corporation, according to the same report.
