Shopify CEO Warns About AI: "Those I Care About Deserve to Know What's Coming" Shopify experienced a significant stock drop after releasing its quarterly results, reflecting growing investor concerns about the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on traditional tech companies. The advancement of models like Anthropic's Claude Opus and OpenAI's ChatGPT Codex is revolutionizing software development, especially in the SaaS (Software as a Service) sector. This context has created market uncertainty, affecting even companies with strong results. Despite reporting solid revenues in 2025, reaching $11.556 billion (30% more than in 2024), Shopify's stock fell nearly 10%. The gross merchandise volume managed by the platform rose to $378.441 billion, a 29% increase, accelerating its growth compared to the previous year. The annual operating profit was $1.468 billion, surpassing $1.075 billion in 2024, and free cash flow reached $2.007 billion, with a margin of 17%. However, net profit dropped 39% to $1.231 billion due to extraordinary investments and tax burdens. Shopify does not view AI as a passing trend. In its SEC filings, the Canadian company emphasizes that commerce is entering a new era driven by artificial intelligence, and its platform must evolve to lead this change. "2025 was a high-performance year for Shopify, laying the groundwork for the new era of commerce with AI," stated Harley Finkelstein, the company's president. CFO Jeff Hoffmeister highlighted that AI is transforming how consumers discover and purchase products, prompting Shopify to invest in tools like Catalog, Sidekick, Universal Commerce Protocol, and its comprehensive business solutions platform. Shopify's management acknowledges that AI not only optimizes internal processes but is also changing consumer behavior and the online shopping experience. Therefore, the company is betting on a flexible and agnostic technological architecture, positioning itself as essential infrastructure for internet commerce, beyond just being an online store creator. Currently, Shopify integrates AI features into its platform, such as Sidekick, its business assistant, and Agentic Storefronts, which facilitate product discovery and payment through intelligent agents. These innovations anticipate a future where automated systems will play an active role in the buying and selling experience. However, Shopify warns its investors about the risks associated with AI use, including regulatory challenges and potential legal issues arising from the large-scale data handling by automated agents. The company emphasizes that AI regulation is still developing and that responsibility in case of errors from these systems is not yet clearly defined.
