Lacrosse Lessons to Stand Out at Goldman Sachs: The Key is Social Skills If you aspire to work at Goldman Sachs, honing your social skills may be as important as mastering technology. Two partners from the bank shared with Business Insider how artificial intelligence is influencing hiring processes, although human qualities remain essential. Meena Lakdawala-Flynn, co-head of Global Private Wealth Management and One Goldman Sachs, emphasizes that despite the restructuring driven by AI, interpersonal skills are more valuable than ever. “We look for good judgment, strong interpersonal skills, creativity, curiosity, and of course, a solid work ethic,” she states. In wealth management, building trust-based relationships is crucial, and AI allows for more time with clients by automating routine tasks. Lakdawala-Flynn notes that tools like the ‘GS AI Assistant’ and automatic translators are already part of her team's daily routine, but insists that human connection is what truly makes a difference: “The more you connect with the client and earn their trust, the more they open up.” Asahi Pompey, global head of the Corporate Engagement Office and chair of the Urban Investment Group, has been at Goldman Sachs for nearly two decades and is a regular user of AI. However, she maintains that the fundamentals for standing out at the bank have not changed: “We look for attention to detail, deep understanding of the work, responsiveness, and accuracy, because the pace is very fast.” Pompey adds that knowing how to interact with AI chatbots and question their responses is becoming increasingly relevant, but it does not replace basic skills. Goldman Sachs has invested nearly $6 billion in technology this year. CEO David Solomon asserts that AI will “enhance and transform our engineering capabilities,” while Marco Argenti, chief information officer, highlights that younger employees are already “AI natives.” Although a recent internal memo mentioned limited job cuts due to AI, Solomon emphasizes that technology also requires hiring more high-value talent.
