"US appoints lieutenant colonels to executives from Meta, Palantir, and OpenAI: key points and open questions"
On June 13, 2025, four high-ranking executives from tech giants donned the uniform of the United States Army at Fort Myer-Henderson, just minutes from the Pentagon. After taking an oath, they were appointed as lieutenant colonels in the Reserve, in a controversial decision that marked the launch of Detachment 201, a military unit dedicated exclusively to technological innovation in defense.
The new reservists are Shyam Sankar, CTO of Palantir; Andrew Bosworth, CTO of Meta; Kevin Weil, CPO of OpenAI; and Bob McGrew, advisor at Thinking Machines Labs and former head of research at OpenAI. The name Detachment 201 refers to the HTTP code 201, which indicates the successful creation of a resource, in a nod to Silicon Valley culture. The four will continue in their current roles while serving as reservists.
Sankar, a leader in applying technology to the military, had previously shared his ideas in the paper "Defense Reform" published on 18theses.com, advocating for a more efficient integration of AI in the military and criticizing the Department of Defense's view of technology as inaccessible and costly.
The initiative was driven by Brynt Oameter, former head of talent management at the Pentagon, who sought to attract tech experts for key roles in the military. After meeting Sankar at a conference in 2024, the idea took shape and received support from the Trump administration.
Interestingly, no executive from Anthropic was included in the group, despite the company being selected in July 2025 to integrate its AI, Claude, into Pentagon systems. According to Wired, Sankar volunteered and recommended the other three team members.
The mission of these executives is to bring their expertise in AI, software, and data analysis to the U.S. military strategy. For example, the commander of the Indo-Pacific region has requested advice from Detachment 201 on the long-term impact of AI on security. Additionally, they will be able to provide tactical advice on the use of new technological tools by soldiers, acting as internal consultants with military rank.
The potential conflict of interest has been a topic of debate. The Army maintains that members of Detachment 201 will not participate in contractual decisions with the private sector, although their access to internal information could indirectly benefit their companies.
Another controversial issue is the compatibility of this initiative with responsible AI usage policies. OpenAI, for example, prohibits the use of its models to develop weaponry, while the mission of Detachment 201 is explicitly to increase the lethality of the military, which has generated tensions and criticism.
The process to achieve the rank of lieutenant colonel was unusually swift: after two weeks of partial online training, which included physical tests, marksmanship, and basic military protocol, the executives received their rank, avoiding basic training and with the option to fulfill part of their 120 annual service hours remotely, a privilege not available to other reservists. This situation has sparked controversy both within the military and on social media.
