The paper and socks are reinvented: the invisible technology that will transform your daily life
For years, paper seemed destined for traditional tasks like writing, printing, or wrapping. However, researchers at Purdue University have revolutionized this material, endowing it with surprising properties: they have created paper that is waterproof, stain-resistant, and can also function as an interactive keyboard.
This innovative paper generates electricity simply by being touched, without the need for batteries or wires, harnessing the simple movement of the hand. Scientists have managed to print circuits on its surface without the ink smudging, achieving a medium that appears ordinary but reveals its potential when interacted with.
Imagine receiving a package and signing directly on the cardboard, or opening a notebook and touching drawn keys that sound like a piano. The future of everyday objects could lie in turning them into invisible interfaces, eliminating the need for screens or buttons.
But smart paper is just the beginning. The same triboelectric principle has inspired another innovation: smart socks. What was once a dull gift can now become a device capable of analyzing your walking pattern and movements.
A team of researchers has developed socks that, combined with artificial intelligence and IoT technology, can identify up to five types of movement with nearly 97% accuracy, using very little energy and at a low manufacturing cost.
Although they are currently prototypes, it is likely that we will soon see garments that not only dress but also care for and protect. Everyday objects like paper or clothing are beginning to transform into invisible technology, becoming digital allies that integrate into your daily life.
Perhaps the future does not consist of adding more screens, but rather in making the objects you already use—a notebook, a package, a pair of socks—into smart tools that accompany and assist you in an almost imperceptible way.
