The U.S. Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, has confirmed that Grok, the AI chatbot developed by Elon Musk, will be integrated into Google's generative AI service to operate on the Pentagon's network. This move is part of a broader strategy to enhance military technological development through access to large volumes of data.
"Shortly, the most advanced AI models will be present across all classified and unclassified networks of our department," Hegseth stated during an event at SpaceX facilities in South Texas.
The announcement comes after recent controversy surrounding Grok, integrated into Musk's X platform, for creating sexualized images without consent, leading countries like Malaysia and Indonesia to block access to the chatbot and prompting the British digital security regulator to open an investigation. Currently, Grok has restricted image generation and editing to paying users.
Hegseth assured that Grok will be operational in the Department of Defense by the end of the month and that "all appropriate data" from military information systems, including intelligence databases, will be made available to the AI.
Hegseth's stance on rapid AI integration contrasts with the caution shown by the Biden administration, which, while promoting the development of AI usage policies, also set limits to prevent abuses such as mass surveillance or the autonomous use of lethal weapons. In 2024, the Biden government implemented a protocol that expanded AI use in national security agencies but prohibited applications that violated civil rights or automated the deployment of nuclear weapons. It is unclear if these restrictions remain in place under the Trump administration.
During his remarks, Hegseth emphasized the importance of accelerating technological innovation in the military and highlighted that the Pentagon has "combat-proven operational data from two decades." "AI is only as effective as the data it receives, and we will ensure it is available," he stated.
The Secretary of Defense insisted that the Pentagon's AI systems will be responsible but also emphasized that he will not accept models that limit legal military capabilities for ideological reasons, asserting that the "Pentagon's AI will not be woke," referring to positions considered excessively progressive.
Grok was presented by Musk as an alternative to chatbots that he claims reflect a "woke AI," such as Google's Gemini or OpenAI's ChatGPT. However, Grok has also faced controversy for antisemitic comments and controversial posts. So far, the Pentagon has not responded to inquiries about these incidents.
