The year 2025 marked a turning point in the global mobile app market. For the first time, user spending on apps surpassed that on video games, primarily driven by the emergence of generative artificial intelligence, according to the 'State of Mobile 2026' report by SensorTower.
Although this trend had already been observed in markets like the U.S., it solidified globally in 2025. Users spent $85.6 billion on apps, representing a 21% increase from 2024. In contrast, spending on games remained stable at $81.8 billion, just 1% more than the previous year.
The report attributes this shift to the integration of generative AI, which led revenue growth and exceeded $5 billion in 2025. Downloads of AI apps doubled, reaching 3.8 million.
Among the ten most downloaded apps of the year, all were AI assistants. ChatGPT topped the list with nearly 900 million downloads, followed by Google Gemini, DeepSeek, Doubao, Perplexity, and Grok. Additionally, ChatGPT generated over $3.4 billion in global revenue through in-app purchases and subscriptions.
The leadership of AI was bolstered by significant investments from giants like Google, Microsoft, and X, which bet on their own assistants to compete with ChatGPT. Other AI-based apps, such as Suno, ByteDance, and Jimeng AI, also gained relevance throughout the year.
On the other hand, SensorTower highlights the growth of social media and streaming apps, with TikTok and Disney+ leading the way. Users spent an average of 90 minutes daily on social media, totaling nearly 2.5 trillion hours, a 5% increase from the previous year.
