Juan Miguel Trejo, president of the Extremadura Business Association of Information and Communication Technologies (Aextic) and CEO of Ariadnex, highlights the potential of Extremadura in areas such as cybersecurity and artificial intelligence. However, he points out that the regional tech sector faces significant challenges, such as the small size of companies, lack of critical mass, and difficulty in retaining specialized talent. In recent years, Extremadura has promoted initiatives to position itself as a technological reference, such as the network of incubators, the Minimally Invasive Surgery Center, and the Energy Storage Center. Trejo acknowledges progress but emphasizes that the transformation is complex due to the region's agricultural origins and the absence of large companies capable of leading large-scale projects. According to Trejo, the pandemic was a turning point as it facilitated the provision of tech services outside the region thanks to remote work. For Trejo, it is essential to strengthen the local business fabric, not only by attracting external agents but also by enhancing existing capabilities. He highlights the work of public centers like Computaex, although he believes greater collaboration with the private sector and investment in larger-scale projects are necessary to increase revenue and investment. The shortage of qualified tech profiles is another challenge. Although the University of Extremadura offers training comparable to other national institutions, the rapid technological evolution requires constant updating. The ICT job market has minimal unemployment, but mobility and remote work hinder talent retention. Additionally, Trejo warns about the proliferation of profiles that, despite using tools like ChatGPT, lack a solid technical foundation. Extremadura, with a tech sector representing nearly 2% of its GDP, has specialized companies recognized nationally and internationally, such as Render in augmented reality and Mobbeel in biometric security. However, the region lacks large companies with million-euro revenues, limiting its impact. Regarding digital nomads, Trejo believes that while remote work in rural areas has been promoted, reality has not met the generated expectations, with an idealized vision prevailing. Nevertheless, he acknowledges a positive evolution driven by the cost of living in large cities. Vocational Training (FP) remains an effective way to meet the technical needs of the sector, especially with specializations in development, systems, cybersecurity, and communications. Dual FP, while appropriate, is limited by the lack of large companies that can absorb all students in internships. Concerning talent demand, Trejo states that companies seek senior profiles, but high turnover and lack of experience force them to rely on young professionals, who often change companies after gaining experience. Regarding tech hubs, Trejo believes that energy and health have not yet generated a clear pull effect on the regional ICT sector, as the demand for tech services is usually channeled from outside Extremadura. However, he sees potential in high-value managed services, which allow local teams to work for global clients, generating qualified employment and fostering sector growth. On artificial intelligence, Trejo considers its impact will be dual: it will automate tasks and eliminate some jobs, but it will also create new job opportunities. Overall, he anticipates a positive effect, accelerating the evolution of the Extremadura business fabric.
