The rise of generative artificial intelligence surprised several tech leaders at the end of 2022. Microsoft and Google quickly reacted to the success of ChatGPT, adjusting their strategies throughout 2023. Apple, on the other hand, chose to wait until June 2024 to present its proposal, avoiding the term "artificial" and focusing on personal intelligence aimed at daily utility. However, the complexity of this approach led the company to postpone its launch until spring 2025. Meanwhile, Lenovo has been quietly working on an even more ambitious vision of personal AI. During CES in Las Vegas, the Chinese firm introduced Qira, its intelligent assistant, which will hit the market in 2026. Like the next generation of Siri, Qira aims to understand the user through the information stored on their devices and their interactions with them. Both solutions seek to remember places, contacts, and details that the user may have forgotten, a feature that Apple promoted in an ad featuring Bella Ramsey, although it later withdrew the campaign after failing to meet those expectations. Lenovo goes further: Qira not only responds to requests but anticipates needs and offers to complete pending tasks, always with the user's consent. Yuanquin Yang, CEO of Lenovo, emphasized during the Tech World presentation the importance of privacy and user control, as the user must approve each function of Qira. This approach addresses privacy criticisms that other AI features, like Microsoft's Recall, have received. Qira will be available on the latest Lenovo computers and tablets, as well as Motorola smartphones and smartwatches. Its integration will allow, for example, the assistant to finish a presentation started on the computer from the mobile device, regardless of the user's location. Angelina Gómez, Lenovo's software marketing director, demonstrated these capabilities live during the event. In the CES demonstrations, Qira performed tasks such as searching for trips to Italy when the user was researching Florence, showcasing the difference between AI agents, which automate complex processes, and traditional assistants, which require constant intervention. Dan Dery, Lenovo's vice president of AI ecosystem, defines Qira as a "super agent" that operates across multiple devices and uses hybrid AI: combining local and cloud processing, similar to ChatGPT. Apple, for its part, has faced technical difficulties in developing its new Siri, according to leaks. The integration of various proprietary language models generated unreliable responses, leading the company to redesign its software architecture and, according to rumors, incorporate Google Gemini models to complement its solutions. Unlike Apple, Lenovo has chosen to collaborate with various AI providers, such as Microsoft, Stability AI, Notion, and Perplexity. Tolga Kurtoglu, Lenovo's CTO, explained that the key to a super agent like Qira is the "intelligent orchestration" of different language models, selecting the most suitable for each task and optimizing performance, security, and costs. Yang, Lenovo's CEO, hopes that its bet on personal AI will empower users in adopting this technology, which he considers inevitable. Tim Cook, Apple's CEO, has indicated that the new Siri aims to transform the relationship with devices, continuing the technological evolution that began with the personal computer. In this race, Lenovo has a robust infrastructure and aspires to create "digital twins" that manage memories and personal information, opening new technological and ethical frontiers. However, Apple maintains the advantage of a much larger user base, which could limit the adoption of Qira, despite its innovative potential.
