The rapid rise of ChatGPT as one of the most visited websites in the world highlights the profound transformation occurring in the digital economy. According to data from Similarweb, OpenAI's platform reached 5.5 billion visits in January, making it the fifth most popular website globally.
This milestone confirms its consolidation and historic surpassing of platforms like Wikipedia, Reddit, or X (formerly Twitter), which now lag behind in traffic volume. In the global ranking, Google and YouTube maintain their leadership, partly because the former remains the primary gateway to the internet and the latter is the reference for audiovisual content.
The emergence of ChatGPT just two years ago has disrupted the way people interact with information: traditional browsing is losing relevance, and instead of searching for data on Google or Wikipedia, users turn directly to the chatbot to resolve queries, check the weather, engage in conversations, or request personalized menus based on their needs. ChatGPT has become a versatile and omnipresent tool on the web.
The platform's growth has been extraordinary. In April 2025, ChatGPT recorded 5.14 billion monthly visits, representing a year-on-year increase of 182%. This pace of expansion is unusual in a mature digital market, where growth is typically more gradual.
Moreover, ChatGPT has been virtually the only site within the global top 10 to experience sustained traffic increases, while other giants like Google, YouTube, or Facebook have shown stagnation or occasional declines. This phenomenon reflects not only rapid adoption but also a partial substitution of traditional internet uses.
The advancement of ChatGPT is both quantitative and qualitative. Unlike search engines or social networks, its value lies in directly addressing user intent, eliminating intermediate steps like navigating through multiple pages. This represents a structural change in the digital value chain, where previously users would search, click, and consume content; now, everything happens in a single conversational interface.
From an economic perspective, this model challenges the traditional system based on advertising and web traffic. If users obtain answers without leaving the platform, the number of clicks and, consequently, advertising revenue may be affected. In fact, platforms like Wikipedia and forums have reported declines or slowdowns in their growth coinciding with the rise of AI assistants.
The speed of ChatGPT's adoption is also notable. It entered the global top 15 in 2024, just a year after its launch, and by 2026 it already occupies the fifth position. This pace even surpasses that of social networks like Facebook or Instagram in their early days, demonstrating both user interest and the tool's broad utility.
The phenomenon also has a global dimension. The United States leads traffic to ChatGPT with 15.1%, followed by India and Brazil, rapidly growing tech markets. This indicates that the expansion of artificial intelligence is not limited to advanced economies but is rapidly spreading worldwide, driven by digitalization and mass internet access.
In the business realm, the impact is equally significant. ChatGPT not only concentrates traffic but also dominates the AI tools segment, capturing over 48% of total chatbot traffic in 2025 and establishing itself as the de facto standard in the generative AI market.
Surpassing other platforms has strategic implications. For instance, the fact that ChatGPT has outperformed Amazon in traffic during certain periods reflects a shift in how users discover products and services. Now, instead of searching directly in marketplaces, they turn to AI assistants for recommendations, which could transform e-commerce in the coming years.
