Samaipata strengthens its commitment to the European tech ecosystem with the launch of its third fund, endowed with 110 million euros and focused on investing in early-stage start-ups that leverage the potential of artificial intelligence (AI). With this new vehicle, the manager raises its assets under management to 250 million euros. The fund, which has already secured 70 million euros in its first closing, is backed by institutional investors such as the Spanish Society for Technological Transformation (SETT), under the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Function, as well as the German fund KfW and several Spanish family offices. Additionally, entrepreneurs and founders of companies previously supported by Samaipata are reinvesting after the success of their businesses. Samaipata's goal with this third fund is to consolidate a long-term pan-European investor base. Capital raising will continue until reaching 110 million euros, seeking to add new institutional and private investors in a context where funds specialized in early-stage AI remain scarce in Europe. This vehicle will invest in 25 to 30 European start-ups, prioritizing AI applications capable of transforming complex sectors, especially in the B2B space, with the potential to generate network effects. Samaipata will lead rounds in early stages and can invest up to 10 million euros per company, including follow-on rounds. The "Founder Success" platform will remain a fundamental pillar, offering comprehensive support to the portfolio, a common model in U.S. venture capital firms but still underutilized in Europe. Samaipata provides key resources in areas such as product, technology, and executive coaching, facilitating the growth of the participating companies. Start-up founders will have access to a network of operating partners with experience in companies like Anthropic, Google, Airbnb, Spotify, and N26, providing strategic vision and operational support at critical moments. This support is complemented by connections to clients, talent, and assistance in structuring future rounds, as well as partnerships with tech partners like Nvidia, Anthropic, Microsoft Azure, and Google Gemini. The fund's launch coincides with a maturity phase in the AI market, where technology is beginning to integrate into key processes of companies and administrations. Samaipata highlights that the reduction in development times and market expansion are allowing the emergence of AI-native companies with greater capital efficiency than in previous cycles. "We are at a turning point. The capabilities of artificial intelligence have surpassed economically relevant thresholds, and the challenge lies in implementation in real use cases. Europe has the talent and sector specialization needed to create global leaders from early stages," says José del Barrio, founding partner of Samaipata. The fund will invest not only in Spain but also in key markets such as Germany, France, and the United Kingdom, reinforcing the pan-European strategy initiated in 2016 by José del Barrio and Eduardo Díez-Hochleitner. So far, Samaipata has invested in 44 European tech companies through its first two funds, with notable participations such as Embat, Imperia, and VIVLA in Spain, and Nory, Bigblue, Matera, or Legl in other countries. The first fund achieved that 80% of its companies reached Series A rounds or higher, and the second fund is already at 60%, figures well above the market average. Among the success stories is Deporvillage, sold in 2021 at a valuation 25 times higher than the initial one.
