WordPress.com, a witness to this evolution for over two decades, has been a key player in this change. We spoke with Moncho Padrón, head of Spanish-speaking communities at Automattic, the parent company of WordPress, about the platform's evolution since its launch in 2003 and the role it plays today for media and content creators. According to Padrón, the integration of AI has had "a very positive effect," as it allows for publishing, development, and business management in a way never seen before. Twenty-three years after its inception, WordPress has evolved from a simple blogging tool to a framework for the open web, encompassing everything from websites to e-commerce and applications. Currently, WordPress maintains its leadership, managing over 43% of websites on the Internet, and continues to prioritize privacy and data control, allowing users to own their content and online activity. Regarding privacy, Padrón highlights Automattic's commitment, as the main contributor to WordPress, to free software and data governance. He emphasizes the importance of users being aware of where and how they manage their information, in contrast to social networks, where control is limited. The adaptability of WordPress has been key to its success. Thanks to its open-source nature, a global ecosystem of developers and companies has contributed to improving user experience, accessibility, and usability, as well as creating plugins and specific solutions for various needs. Automattic, founded in 2005 by Matt Mullenweg, has grown to encompass more than 15 brands and 1,400 employees across over 80 countries. Its products include WooCommerce, WordPress VIP, Newspack, Day One, PocketCasts, and Tumblr, all managed under a remote and distributed work model. Regarding the impact of AI, Padrón describes it as "transformative," as it is redefining the relationship between people, productivity, and results. AI facilitates publishing, development, and business management, allowing any user to manage content and analyze data without the need for large technical teams. WordPress has implemented connectors to work with any AI, establishing itself as a key tool in the democratization of both publishing and web development. On the concern about job loss, Padrón believes that AI is a tool that accelerates and facilitates work, and that the real impact depends on business vision. For content creators, AI represents an opportunity to professionalize and expand their capabilities, enabling more people to access digital production. Among the challenges, he highlights the total integration with AI and data governance, keeping WordPress as a reference in the open web. The upcoming version, WordPress 7.0, will include native integration with MCP and new features in WordPress Studio, allowing development with AI like Claude through natural language commands.
