The three candidates for the Rectorship of the University of Vigo agree that artificial intelligence will be key in the institution's digital strategy in the coming years, although each proposes different approaches for its integration.
AI is already part of daily life in many universities, and its use by students through tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude presents new challenges. Regulating its use and promoting ethical practices has become a priority for educational institutions. The candidates to succeed Manuel Reigosa have included specific proposals regarding AI in their programs.
The representative of H2040 proposes to strengthen technological infrastructure and establish responsible governance of AI, advocating for a university model based on data and automation, always under ethical and security criteria. She suggests creating an ethical committee to oversee AI-related projects and will seek collaboration with entities like Cesga. Her plan prioritizes data protection and the use of AI to automate repetitive tasks and improve services, as well as promoting AI training for teachers, students, and administrative staff.
On the other hand, the candidate from ConSenso advocates for defining a clear institutional framework for the use of generative AI at the University of Vigo, applicable to teaching, research, and management. He also proposes a technology ethics committee and a specific policy for the pedagogical integration of AI. His program includes the progressive automation of administrative processes and the development of a natural language search platform, aiming to create a 'digital twin' of the university to facilitate decision-making through predictive analytics.
The candidate from Nós-Universidade, in line with her rivals, supports a gradual integration of AI to ensure institutional coherence, academic integrity, and learning adapted to the digital age. Her proposal includes a common academic framework for the use of AI in teaching and assessment, seeking to ensure that students clearly understand how to use these tools without losing their educational value. Additionally, she proposes training pathways in digital and AI competencies for teachers and students, aiming to introduce new teaching methodologies compatible with artificial intelligence and move towards competency-based assessment.
