BBVA's president, Carlos Torres Vila, highlighted the transformative role of artificial intelligence (AI) across all sectors of society, describing its impact as a positive revolution that will drive competitiveness and innovation. During an event organized by EL PERIÓDICO, BBVA, and Cecot at the Recinto Modernista de Sant Pau in Barcelona, business, institutional, and technological leaders discussed the challenges and opportunities posed by AI. Torres Vila emphasized that AI marks the beginning of a new era, not just as a technological advancement but as a profound change in how companies and administrations operate. "Artificial intelligence is revolutionizing all businesses and services, and its adoption is advancing at an unprecedented pace," he stated in a conversation with Albert Sáez, director of EL PERIÓDICO. According to BBVA's president, history shows that technology ultimately generates a positive impact on society. Unlike previous technological revolutions, AI is characterized by its rapid adoption and ease of use, as evidenced by the growth of tools like ChatGPT, which already has hundreds of millions of weekly users. Torres Vila cited the scientific and pharmaceutical sectors as examples where AI has accelerated processes that previously took years, generating tangible benefits for society. The BBVA president anticipated that in the next five to ten years, all companies will need to reinvent themselves, adapting both their customer relationships and internal processes. "The key to remaining relevant is adaptation," he warned, especially for medium-sized enterprises. He highlighted that AI allows for personalized offerings and improved customer service, making banking more accessible and understanding of individual needs. From a financial perspective, Torres Vila reiterated BBVA's commitment to supporting companies in their digital transformation, not only through financing but also by developing solutions that facilitate AI integration. "This technology allows us to anticipate customer needs and offer hyper-personalized responses," he noted. Geographically, he positioned Catalonia as a benchmark in AI research and adoption, thanks to its entrepreneurial and technological ecosystem, and its leadership in sectors such as health, mobility, and finance. Cecot's president, Xavier Panés, agreed that AI represents an opportunity rather than a threat, although he warned about the need to generate specialized talent at the pace demanded by technology. "The real risk is not adapting in time," he stated. The event concluded with a roundtable where experts analyzed the strategic role of AI. María Galindo, Secretary of Digital Policies of the Generalitat, advocated for a long-term vision and recalled the Catalonia 2030 Artificial Intelligence Strategy, which foresees over 80 initiatives and an investment of 1 billion euros. "It's not just an economic bet; it's a vision for the country," she emphasized. Miquel Martí, CEO of Tech Barcelona, stressed that AI will be crucial for business survival: "There will be no gap between those who use AI and those who don't; simply, some companies will exist and others will not." Meanwhile, Mariona Sanz, Director of Innovation and Business Development at BSC, reiterated that AI is already the engine of new science and that the future cannot be understood without its integration into daily life.
