The Giralda, a symbol of Seville, was not the work of Artificial Intelligence, but of the ingenuity and sensitivity of the master builders and stonemasons of its time. They were unaware of terms like chatGPT, but their legacy remains. At the Archbishop's Palace, Archbishop José Ángel Saiz Meneses presided over the XXII Meeting of Christian Thought, focused on Ethical Governance and Artificial Intelligence. AI, whose initials mirror those of AI (Amnesty International), raises profound questions: does it liberate us or confine us? Does it make us wiser or more dependent? Rafael Alberti, who would have turned 123, never imagined AI in his 'Marinero en tierra', but his reflections on intelligence remain relevant. More than a hundred attendees participated in the event, centered around the document 'Antiqua et Nova', a note from the Dicasteries for the Doctrine of the Faith and for Culture and Education, inspired by Pope Francis's idea: “we are not living in an era of change, but a change of era.” Three university rectors, professors, preachers, and faithful debated alongside speakers Agustín Domingo Moratalla, a professor of Moral and Political Philosophy, and Jorge Paradela Gutiérrez, advisor on Industry, Energy, and Mines. Ortega y Gasset already anticipated the impact of technology in his work 'La meditación de la técnica', a required reading for Moratalla's students, who highlight how AI is already transforming education: “My Chinese students translate my classes in real-time with smart glasses.” The debate on ethics in AI led to the proposal of “algorética,” an ethics adapted to the age of algorithms, a revolution faster and deeper than the industrial one. The archbishop recalled the importance of ensuring that technology serves humanity, preventing it from becoming an end in itself. Technological changes have altered habits and forms of communication, as noted by a professor: “Young people no longer point with their index finger, but with their thumb, and prefer the screen to direct eye contact.” Moratalla presented the three models of AI: the Chinese, focused on the state; the American, on business; and the European, which seeks regulatory balance. AI, capable of serving both communist and capitalist systems, redefines the concept of internationalism. Paradela provided revealing data: it took 74 years for telephony to reach 100 million users, WhatsApp achieved it in three and a half years, and chatGPT in just two months. Graphene, a revolutionary material, symbolizes technological acceleration. China is already teaching AI literacy, while Andalusia advances with vocational training modules and a pioneering center in Granada. Pope Francis warns that in this change of era, there are no black and white issues, and the cause-effect relationship is transforming. Japan, with high robotization, maintains full employment. Knowledge, once the domain of encyclopedists, now fits in a mobile phone, which serves both to read reflections and to listen to sports broadcasts. Source: diariodesevilla.es
