OpenAI and Jony Ive are preparing smart glasses and an AI speaker to compete with Apple and Meta.
The race to lead the market for smart devices with artificial intelligence has a new and powerful competitor. According to a report from The Information, OpenAI, in collaboration with renowned designer Jony Ive, is developing an innovative line of hardware under the brand "io," which will include smart glasses, a smart speaker, and other AI-powered devices.
This strategic alliance aims to position OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, as a relevant player in the hardware sector, directly competing with giants like Apple, Meta, and Google. The initial focus of "io" will be on wearables, highlighting smart glasses and an AI pin inspired by the concept of Humane, but promising to offer a more functional and portable experience.
The manufacturing of these devices will be supported by Luxshare, one of the main assemblers of iPhones and AirPods in China, and Goertek, a supplier of components for AirPods and HomePods. Goertek will provide speaker modules and other key components for the screenless smart speaker that OpenAI is preparing, which aims to compete directly with Apple's HomePod.
The team behind "io" is strengthening with the addition of more than twenty engineers and designers from Apple, experts in wearables, cameras, audio, and user interfaces. This move seeks to replicate the culture of innovation that characterized Apple during Jony Ive's era.
However, the ambitious project faces its first legal challenge. The startup iyO has sued "io" for the use of the name, requesting the withdrawal of all promotional material related to the brand. The litigation has revealed that the first "io" device will not hit the market before 2026.
The collaboration between Jony Ive and Sam Altman promises to revolutionize the hardware sector with AI, although it will still need to overcome legal obstacles before realizing its vision.
