A recent report by the consulting firm LlyC analyzes how Spanish tourist destinations are perceived and recommended by major Artificial Intelligence (AI) engines, such as ChatGPT. The study reveals that AI, when generating travel plans, tends to favor autonomous communities with a greater digital presence, resulting in regions like Andalusia, Catalonia, and Madrid being suggested much more frequently than others like Cantabria, Navarra, or Murcia, which barely appear in recommendations.
This bias is due to the volume of mentions and online visibility of each destination, placing some regions in a privileged position while others remain virtually invisible to algorithms. Thus, communities like La Rioja and Extremadura are also sidelined despite their tourist appeal, which may affect their ability to attract visitors.
The barometer, based on 1,800 queries to language models, also identifies the main strengths of each region. In Catalonia, AI highlights gastronomy, pointing to El Celler de Can Roca as a world reference and markets like La Boquería and wine regions such as Penedès and Priorat as differentiating elements.
Andalusia leads in mentions and versatility, excelling in premium tourism (with Marbella and Puerto Banús as symbols of luxury and the Tren Al Ándalus as an exclusive experience), cultural tourism (thanks to the Alhambra, the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba, and the Alcázar of Seville), and sports tourism (with Sierra Nevada, Tarifa, Caminito del Rey, and the Costa del Sol as references).
Madrid, for its part, stands out as a business destination and as a hub for LGTBIQ+ life, with the Chueca neighborhood and the celebration of Pride as major attractions. The Balearic and Canary Islands dominate in sun and beach tourism, Aragón in nature and rural tourism, and Castilla y León in heritage and religious tourism, with a visibility of 74.5% in the latter segment.
The report also points out areas for improvement for less visible regions. Navarra, although excelling in nature and gastronomy, is overshadowed by other communities and is recommended to enhance its own narrative. Murcia, with sun and beach as its main appeal, could improve its positioning by highlighting its Jumilla wines, gastronomy, and the cultural potential of Cartagena.
Finally, the study outlines the type of tourist attracted by each region: Catalonia is ideal for groups of friends seeking culture, beach, and nightlife; Andalusia is the preferred option for families, couples, cultural travelers, and sports enthusiasts; and Madrid leads among the LGTBIQ+ audience, especially during Pride.
