OpenAI implements parental controls in ChatGPT following reports of youth suicides in the U.S.
OpenAI has announced the introduction of parental controls in ChatGPT in response to testimonies from parents before the U.S. Congress linking their children's suicides to interactions with artificial intelligence chatbots.
The company detailed that the new controls will allow parents to link their accounts with their children's, set usage schedules, receive notifications of emotional distress signals, and limit the type of interaction with the platform. Additionally, if they are unable to contact parents in emergency situations, OpenAI will reach out to authorities as an additional measure.
Among the new features, which will be available by the end of the month, is an age verification system that will automatically restrict access to content not suitable for those under 18. If the user's age cannot be confirmed, a safe experience for teenagers will be activated by default, allowing adults to verify their identity to access advanced features.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasized that protecting minors is a priority: "We prioritize safety over privacy and freedom in the case of teenagers; this technology is powerful and requires significant safeguards."
In previous statements, Altman expressed sorrow over the suicide cases and acknowledged the company's responsibility: "Maybe we could have done more. Perhaps we could have been more proactive or said something better."
With these measures, OpenAI aims to enhance the safety of teenagers and address the growing social concern about the impact of artificial intelligence on youth mental health.
