The President of the United States, Donald Trump, signed an executive order on Thursday aimed at limiting the imposition of state regulations deemed "excessive" on artificial intelligence (AI). The document warns against regulations that, according to the administration, force companies to introduce "ideological biases" into their AI systems.
The order emphasizes that innovation in AI requires freedom and that the proliferation of state regulations hinders technological advancement. "American AI companies must be able to innovate without unnecessary regulatory burdens. Excessive state regulation obstructs this goal," the text states, also criticizing state laws that require the inclusion of ideological criteria in AI models.
In particular, the order mentions a Colorado law aimed at preventing discrimination against vulnerable groups and notes that other states like California, Utah, and Texas have implemented similar regulations in the private sector.
The Trump administration argues that it is essential to work with Congress to establish a uniform and minimally restrictive national regulation, thus avoiding a patchwork of divergent state regulations.
In order to "preserve and strengthen the global leadership of the United States in AI under a light national regulatory framework," Trump has asked Attorney General Pam Bondi to create a task force to challenge those state laws on AI that contradict this approach.
