OpenAI highlights the economic impact of ChatGPT on daily life Since its launch three years ago, ChatGPT has established itself as a key tool in both personal and professional spheres, according to the largest study conducted to date on its use, carried out by the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), the economic research team at OpenAI, and Harvard economist David Deming. The analysis, based on 1.5 million conversations from November 2022 to July 2025, shows how the adoption of ChatGPT has expanded beyond early users, reducing the gender gap and reaching low- and middle-income countries. One of the most relevant findings is the equalization in usage between men and women. While in January 2024 only 37% of users had female names, by July 2025 this figure exceeded 52%. Additionally, young people lead adoption, generating 46% of the analyzed messages. The growth of ChatGPT is particularly notable in low-income countries, where the adoption rate in May 2025 was four times higher than in high-income countries, highlighting its increasing global accessibility. Regarding usage, the study reveals that ChatGPT is primarily employed for everyday personal tasks, such as information searching, practical guidance, and writing, which account for nearly 80% of conversations. Although professional use is steadily growing, it currently only represents 30% of the total. Within the workplace, writing is the most common task, making up 40% of conversations, while programming and self-expression remain minority activities. The analysis also identifies three major categories of use: 'Ask' (49%), where users seek advice; 'Do' (40%), focused on text generation, planning, and programming; and 'Express' (11%), which encompasses personal reflections and creative exploration. OpenAI emphasizes that the economic value generated by ChatGPT goes beyond traditional metrics like GDP, as it enhances productivity, decision-making, and access to knowledge both at work and in personal life. The growth in chatbot usage is also attributed to improvements in AI models and the discovery of new use cases, solidifying ChatGPT as an essential tool for productivity and personal development worldwide.
