Meta has shaken the tech industry with a decision that redefines the use of artificial intelligence in WhatsApp, the world's most popular messaging platform. The company has updated the terms of WhatsApp Business, introducing a key restriction: starting January 15, 2026, generative AI providers will not be able to operate bots through the business API.
This means that services like Luzia, ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Zapia will no longer be available on WhatsApp from that date, according to reports from Xataka and TechCrunch. Meta has made it clear that AI or machine learning developers will not be able to use WhatsApp Business to offer products whose main function is language generation.
The change will have a considerable impact, as WhatsApp has over 3 billion active users, many of whom relied on these bots for easy access to AI without needing to install additional apps or create accounts.
The measure has raised concerns among businesses that depend on automation for customer service. However, Meta clarifies that the restriction does not affect businesses that integrate AI into their own services, but rather those providers that distribute general-use assistants through the platform.
In practice, companies like banks, restaurants, or travel agencies will still be able to use chatbots to manage inquiries or bookings, as long as these bots are integrated into their offerings and are not external generative AI solutions.
Meta argues that the business API is designed to facilitate customer service and relevant communication, not to serve as a distribution channel for third-party mass assistants, which could overwhelm the infrastructure.
The company notes that the rise of generative AI bots has increased message traffic to levels that are difficult to manage, forcing Meta to take measures to protect the stability and original purpose of the API.
As a result, Meta AI will be the only assistant allowed on WhatsApp, reinforcing the company's own ecosystem and excluding general-purpose generative AI competitors.
