Anthropic has announced a significant expansion in the healthcare sector with the launch of Claude for Healthcare, a solution designed for providers, insurers, and patients to use Claude's AI in medical settings under privacy standards like HIPAA. This new product extends the reach of Claude for Life Sciences, which was already used in pharmaceutical research and development, and reinforces Anthropic's commitment to positioning its AI in highly regulated industries.
Competition in the field of artificial intelligence applied to health is intensifying, with OpenAI presenting similar alternatives and startups like Abridge and Sword Health attracting millions in investments to develop AI-based medical tools.
Claude for Healthcare aims to reduce administrative burdens and facilitate the understanding of medical information for both professionals and patients. It is based on the latest version of the model, Claude Opus 4.5, which the company claims significantly improves performance in medical and scientific tasks, minimizing factual errors.
Among the new features, Claude can now connect to key industry databases, such as the Medicare and Medicaid Coverage Database, ICD-10 codes, the National Provider Identifier Registry, and PubMed. These integrations allow for quick access to relevant information, optimize prior authorization processes, and streamline the generation of medical reports.
Additionally, Anthropic introduces customizable "Agent Skills," which facilitate the creation of applications compatible with FHIR, the standard for health data exchange, and simplify tasks like prior authorization requests.
For individual users, Anthropic enables integrations that allow U.S. subscribers of Pro and Max plans to securely connect their personal medical histories to Claude. New connectors, such as HealthEx and Function Health, are already in beta, with upcoming integrations with Apple HealthKit and Android Health Connect. Anthropic assures that accessed data is not stored or used to train its models.
In the life sciences field, Claude expands its compatibility with platforms like Medidata, ClinicalTrials.gov, and bioRxiv, and adds features for drafting clinical trial protocols in accordance with FDA and NIH requirements, as well as for monitoring trial development.
