On January 19, OpenAI announced that ChatGPT will start displaying ads, even to paying subscribers. This decision has sparked strong backlash among users and has been mocked by competitors.
Anthropic, the company behind the Claude chatbot, took the opportunity to launch several ads during Super Bowl LX, the most-watched sporting event in the U.S., ridiculing OpenAI's decision. In these ads, a user interacts with an AI-driven psychologist who interrupts a conversation to recite an advertisement, clearly criticizing the integration of advertising in chatbots.
Anthropic has been adamant: it does not plan to include ads in Claude under any circumstances, despite the high costs of maintaining its AI. In a blog post titled "Claude is a space for thinking," the company defends its business model and rejects advertising, arguing that it would be incompatible with its vision of a useful and reliable assistant for work and deep reflection.
The company emphasizes that Claude will remain ad-free and that its responses will not be influenced by commercial interests or include sponsored links. Anthropic maintains that privacy is fundamental, as conversations with chatbots often address personal and sensitive topics, making them particularly vulnerable to external influences.
According to Anthropic, they are still studying how AI models affect users and warn that an ad-based system could have unpredictable consequences. The Constitution of Claude, the document guiding the chatbot's development, states that its responses should be as beneficial as possible, without economic or political incentives.
The company exemplifies: if a user asks Claude about sleep issues, the assistant will seek solutions based on the provided information, without turning the inquiry into a commercial opportunity. The presence of ads could undermine the impartiality of recommendations and erode user trust.
Even the inclusion of ads outside of direct responses, according to Anthropic, would compromise their vision of a genuinely useful assistant. While the company does not rule out revisiting its stance in the future, it assures that any changes will be communicated transparently, considering options like more accessible subscription plans or regional pricing to maintain the service's free availability.
