Every time we interact with a browser, a search engine, or a conversational assistant, we generate or input data that can be used to personalize our experience. However, we do not always want that information to be stored, even securely. This is why options like incognito mode in browsers such as Chrome, Safari, or Firefox, and features like temporary chat in ChatGPT exist.
Both alternatives aim for the same goal: to protect user privacy when conducting searches or inquiries involving personal or sensitive information. We have all encountered situations where we prefer certain questions or topics not to be recorded, whether in Google, Safari, or ChatGPT. In the case of ChatGPT, this is particularly relevant, as previous conversations can influence future responses, given that OpenAI's AI learns from interactions to improve its performance.
The temporary chat feature in ChatGPT emerges as a solution for these cases. It allows for conversations that are not stored in the history, ideal for specific inquiries or topics that the user prefers to keep private. This way, you can separate your regular interactions from those you do not wish to retain, or prevent a specific question from affecting the context of future conversations.
Unlike regular chats, the temporary chat does not save the content of the conversation once it is finished. According to official documentation, it works like an incognito mode: ChatGPT does not have access to previous conversations nor retains memories of what was discussed, although it can follow custom instructions if activated. This is useful because, under normal conditions, each conversation contributes to the personalization and learning of the assistant.
There are three main reasons to use temporary chat: to discuss personal or sensitive topics, to prevent certain information from influencing AI personalization, or to make unique inquiries that do not require follow-up. Although OpenAI stores these conversations for up to 30 days for legal reasons, they are not used to train AI models, adding an extra layer of privacy.
However, temporary chat has limitations. It does not allow resuming previous conversations, as it is designed for one-time use. Additionally, it is subject to the restrictions of the ChatGPT plan subscribed to and is not a completely private system, as information is temporarily stored on OpenAI's servers.
Temporary chat is available in both the web version and the mobile apps of ChatGPT for iOS and Android. To use it, simply select the corresponding option after logging in. The interface changes color to differentiate it from regular chats, and when finished, you can return to the usual mode with a single click. It is important to note that if you have not logged in, you will only have access to regular conversations, which do contribute to the training of the AI.
