Boris Cherny, creator of Claude Code at Anthropic, believes that the traditional role of software engineer is undergoing transformation due to advancements in artificial intelligence. In a recent interview on Y Combinator's "Lightcone" podcast, Cherny predicted that by 2026, AI will have automated much of the coding process, leading to a redefinition of positions in the tech industry. According to Cherny, coding as a primary task is practically solved thanks to AI, and he foresees that the title of "software engineer" could disappear or become obsolete. Instead, professionals will take on broader roles, such as writing technical specifications or directly interacting with users, becoming much more generalist profiles. In his team, he already observes how roles like product managers, designers, and even finance staff are actively participating in coding tasks. This change is not isolated. Other tech leaders have noted that AI has revolutionized the dynamics of their teams. Jesal Gadhia, founder of a startup, told Business Insider that currently all the code for his company is generated by AI agents, something unthinkable just two years ago. However, the growing dependence on AI also brings challenges. Some engineers report increased productivity, but also an overload of work and what they call "AI fatigue."
