Apple has confirmed that the next generation of its Apple Foundation Models will be built on the Gemini models, the advanced artificial intelligence developed by Google. This agreement marks a milestone in the tech industry, uniting two giants that have historically been rivals, but are now collaborating to drive innovation in AI.
Apple's decision responds to the challenges it has faced in developing the new Siri and more sophisticated features of its Apple Intelligence platform. Unable to launch these innovations on the expected timelines, the company has opted to rely on Google's technology for the next few years, although it does not rule out returning to its own models in the future.
It is important to note that Apple will not directly integrate Gemini into its devices but will adapt its own AI models using Google's technology. In a joint statement, both companies explained: "Apple and Google have initiated a multi-year collaboration for the next generation of Apple Foundation Models to be based on the Gemini models and Google's cloud infrastructure. These models will enhance the new features of Apple Intelligence, including a more personalized version of Siri that will be available this year."
Privacy remains a priority for Apple. Despite the collaboration, the company assures that Apple Intelligence will continue to run on Apple devices and its own cloud, maintaining the high privacy standards that have characterized it.
Rumors about this alliance had been circulating since mid-2025, anticipating that Apple would turn to Gemini to improve Siri. Although Apple and Google compete in many areas, they also maintain strategic agreements, such as the default use of Google's search engine on Apple devices. The integration of Gemini is another step in this cooperative relationship.
The delay in launching the new Siri and advanced features of Apple Intelligence led Apple to seek Google's support, at least temporarily. It is expected that once the agreement concludes, Apple will resume the development of its own AI models.
For now, the smartest version of Siri will arrive in 2026, powered by Gemini technology, although integrated and adapted to the Apple ecosystem.
