According to the 'II Report on SMEs and Self-Employed in Spain' prepared by Hiscox, 41.2% of Spanish SMEs believe that artificial intelligence (AI) does not provide them with advantages or benefits. In contrast, 58.8% do recognize the value that AI can offer to their businesses. Among the companies that perceive improvements, the main benefits are related to operational efficiency: 53.2% highlight the optimization of tasks and processes, 44% point to greater overall efficiency, and 32.2% mention cost savings. However, direct effects on business growth are less common: only 12.8% have experienced an increase in sales, and just 3.5% have noticed improvements in talent retention. Hiscox attributes this to a still limited use of AI as a strategic tool. The adoption of AI in SMEs has grown significantly in recent years, rising from 7.4% in 2022 to 11.9% in 2024 and reaching 23.3% in 2025. Thus, nearly one in four SMEs has already incorporated AI into their activities. Among these companies, the perception is much more positive: only 16.2% do not see advantages, while 83.8% recognize tangible benefits in their daily operations. In this group of pioneering SMEs, efficiency is again the most valued aspect: 71.2% mention task optimization, 60.3% highlight improved overall efficiency, and 32.6% note cost savings. Additionally, 21.6% report an increase in sales, and 7% observe better talent retention, indicating a more advanced use of technology. Conversely, among the SMEs that have not yet adopted AI (76.7%), nearly half (48.8%) believe it offers no benefits. Furthermore, their perception of improvements in efficiency, savings, and growth is more limited, which, according to Hiscox, highlights the gap between those experiencing AI and those only observing it from the outside. Outside of the Hiscox report, a study by Qlik cited by emprendedores.es reveals that 27% of companies have initiated up to 50 AI projects but ultimately abandoned them, showing the difficulties in implementing these initiatives. The report also analyzes the knowledge and use of generative AI tools. ChatGPT is the most recognized, with 82.1% of SMEs aware of it and 38.5% having used it. Gemini is known by 49.1% and used by 14.2%, while Copilot has a recognition rate of 34.9% and a usage rate of 13.8%. DeepSeek is the least known, with a recognition rate of 26.4% and a usage rate of 5.6%, with its adoption being more common in companies with a higher degree of digitalization.
