Nvidia consolidates its leadership in the artificial intelligence processor sector after closing a multimillion-dollar deal with Meta, one of the main tech players in AI development. Meta, the owner of Instagram and a Nvidia customer for over ten years, has agreed to purchase millions of chips, with the exact value of the deal not disclosed, although experts estimate it to be in the billions of dollars. The agreement includes both Nvidia's current GPUs and the future generation of Vera Rubin chips, which Meta plans to implement in its data centers starting in 2027. Additionally, the company will acquire Grace processors (CPUs) for inference tasks, essential for AI to respond to users in real-time. As artificial intelligence expands, the demand for computing resources for inference grows, and companies are seeking more cost-effective alternatives to GPUs. In this context, OpenAI recently signed a $10 billion contract with Cerebras to secure inference chips. This new contract strengthens Nvidia's position in an increasingly competitive market, where rivals like AMD—who has reached an agreement with OpenAI—and major tech companies developing their own chips are looking to reduce their dependence on Nvidia. Google, Amazon, and Microsoft already have their own AI processors, and OpenAI collaborates with Broadcom on new developments. According to the Financial Times, Meta also uses AMD chips but has faced obstacles in its internal semiconductor project. In November, Nvidia's shares fell by 4% after it was revealed that Meta was considering using Google's TPUs in 2027. Under the leadership of Mark Zuckerberg, Meta is significantly increasing its investment in artificial intelligence, with an 85% rise in its capital expenditure this year, reaching $135 billion. Unlike other major tech companies like Microsoft, Amazon, or Google, Meta does not offer cloud computing services for businesses, so its investments focus on enhancing AI within its own ecosystem.
