Artificial Intelligence Revolutionizes Education in Galicia: Early Warning and Ethical Debate in Classrooms The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) in Galician schools is transforming how academic risk situations are detected and prevented. Inspired by the science fiction of Minority Report, Galicia is developing the first system in Spain capable of identifying students at risk of dropping out before it occurs, through the analysis of large databases. This innovative system, based on an "early warning" approach, integrates academic, health, and social information to alert counselors when concerning patterns are detected. For example, a counselor at a high school in Santiago might receive a notification such as: "Risk pattern detected: student 4,723. 4th year of ESO. Four unexcused absences in two weeks (an increase of 180%), drop in Mathematics grade (from 6.5 to 4), and five absences in extracurricular basketball." The alert is supplemented with social and health data, such as the family's use of social services, the parents' educational level, immigrant background, or the existence of treated eating disorders. Manuel de León, a researcher at CSIC and one of Spain's most recognized mathematicians, emphasizes that this system goes beyond improving academic performance, as it unifies school data and the student's environment. De León is part of the group of experts advising the EdugalIA project, promoted by the Xunta de Galicia, alongside specialists like economist Caterina Calsamiglia and mathematician David Ríos, who highlight the importance of data security and anonymization. The model, with an investment of 16.5 million euros and planned for 2028, involves collaboration from the three public Galician universities and education professionals. Judith Fernández, the director general of Educational Innovation, explains that the goal is to centralize all relevant information in a digital student file, accessible to administrations in case of transfer, including both academic and socioeconomic, health, and family context data. This digital file will collect information on grades, course repetitions, attendance, participation in extracurricular activities, special educational needs, family socioeconomic level, internet access, cases of bullying, or gender transition processes, among others. Scientific evidence indicates that factors such as being male or lacking books at home increase the risk of dropping out, while attending school meals reduces it. Analyzing this data will allow not only for intervention in at-risk trajectories but also for designing more effective educational policies, such as addressing diversity. Galicia will implement a "school vulnerability index" following OECD recommendations to identify schools that require additional support. However, the integration of AI in education raises ethical questions about free will and privacy. Does knowing they are at risk condition the student? Fernández clarifies that decisions will not be automatic, and there will always be human intervention, in accordance with the EU's Artificial Intelligence Law. Additionally, Galicia is preparing a Digital Education Law to regulate the use of AI in educational centers. Regarding privacy, the system ensures data protection by establishing different access levels based on the user's role (tutor, counselor, administrator, or inspector) and avoiding the stigmatization of schools. The ultimate goal is to understand students' trajectories to act preventively and personally, and even, in the future, connect the educational file with the labor market.
