The convergence of interconnection, digitalization, and artificial intelligence is transforming the manufacturing industry, as evidenced at the recent EMO Hannover 2025. Beyond automation, exhibitors showcased how intelligent systems drive more efficient, flexible, and sustainable production, blurring the lines between digital and physical and opening new avenues for innovation and competitiveness.
Hall 6, dedicated to AI and Digitalization, established itself as a hub for professionals interested in practical applications of artificial intelligence in manufacturing. Companies and research institutions presented concrete solutions to optimize production processes, making them smarter, more efficient, and transparent. The AI Hub, a special area of the fair, highlighted the growing relevance of AI in the industry, with proposals aimed at solving real production challenges.
Among the innovations was the chatbot Emil, developed by aiXbrain in collaboration with the WZL of RWTH Aachen University on behalf of VDW. Based on an advanced language model trained with data from the exhibitor directory, Emil allowed visitors to interact in German or English to identify AI solutions in metallurgy and locate relevant exhibitors at the fair.
Interoperability between machines was another central theme, exemplified by the global umati initiative, which uses OPC UA to connect equipment and software, facilitating the secure integration of production data in digital environments. This enables, for example, detailed analysis of energy consumption thanks to standardized communication. Additionally, umati Connect was presented, an open-source tool that enables direct communication between umati and the U.S. standard MTConnect, demonstrating practical compatibility between both systems. Demonstrations also included digital tracking of products, integrating umati OPC UA job management with Asset Administration Shell (AAS).
