Beatriz Martín Jiménez, recently appointed Chief Operating Officer (COO) of UBS, will temporarily assume leadership of the bank's technology area at a crucial time for the institution following the acquisition of Credit Suisse and a decisive move towards artificial intelligence (AI). This move strengthens Martín Jiménez's position, as starting in January, she will combine her role in Operations with oversight of Technology, aiming to accelerate UBS's digital integration and technological transformation. The unexpected departure of CTO Mike Dargan has led to Chris Gelvin taking on the role temporarily while a successor is appointed to report directly to the Spanish executive. UBS has explained that merging the Technology and Operations departments will optimize end-to-end processes, prioritize AI projects, and ensure smooth technological integration following the merger with Credit Suisse. Sergio Ermotti, CEO of UBS, has highlighted Martín Jiménez's leadership and her crucial role in the bank's transformation, positioning her as one of the main candidates to succeed him in the future. Since her return to UBS two years ago, Martín Jiménez has been key in the restructuring following the Credit Suisse rescue, leading the integration of businesses and asset management, which currently exceeds €5.6 trillion. Her career at the institution began in 2016 after her time at Morgan Stanley and has been marked by strategic promotions and the trust of senior management. Coinciding with Martín Jiménez's expanded responsibilities, UBS has announced the appointment of Daniele Magazzeni as Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer (CAIO), a newly created position. Magazzeni, coming from JPMorgan, will be responsible for defining the bank's AI strategy, aiming to transform services, enhance customer experience, and increase internal efficiency through process automation. UBS considers artificial intelligence a strategic priority and has already implemented nearly 300 use cases, including the integration of tools like Microsoft Copilot and its own AI assistant, Red. With these changes, the bank seeks to consolidate its leadership in technological innovation within the financial sector.
